Arthur Ashe embodied the highest qualities of sportsmanship His world-class talent and pursuit of excellence broke down barriers for black Americans in the largely white-dominated sport of tennis In the 1960s and 70s he became the first African-American man to win Wimbledon the U S Open and the Australian Open In later years after publicly announcing he had AIDS he dedicated the rest of his life to raising awareness and educating the public about HIV We remember Arthur Ashe as a role model who used his athletic brilliance to inspire and bring people together
