America Remembers Memorial Day

We observe Memorial Day to remember the sacrifice of all of those who have died while serving in the armed forces It grew out of the nation s need to pay respects to the 750 000 servicemen who died on both sides during the American Civil War Competing Union and Confederate holidays were merged and over time Memorial Day came to cover all those lost in service to their country As we look back over the major conflicts since the Civil War it is important to remember though the numbers can be staggering behind each and every number there is a story We must continue to honor their sacrifice by remembering them and continuing to tell these stories
